Preparing for New Year: Shimekazari

Create your own unique New Year's decoration by combining plants, mizuhiki cord, and auspicious motifs based on rice straw. Why not invite good fortune into your home with a handmade shimenawa decoration?
You will create your own original decoration using seasonal plants and flowers!

In Japan, it has long been customary to display a "shimenawa" at the beginning of a new year.
A shimenawa is considered a "kekkai" (sacred barrier) that marks a pure place to welcome the gods, and it is an important New Year's decoration to tidy up the house and invite good fortune and connections.

However, in modern life, opportunities to deeply understand its meaning and to spend time creating it with our own hands are gradually decreasing.
In this workshop, while touching upon the cultural background of traditional decorations, such as the origin of shimenawa, the prayers embedded in its form, and its connection to rice, its material, you will finish your own original New Year's decoration with your own hands.

Instructor Profile



OHaNa Sengoku Honke
Tatsuya Sengoku

Studied spatial design at Musashino Art University, Faculty of Art and Design.
After graduation, he entered the Sogetsu school of ikebana.
After working as an assistant at a flower studio, he is currently working freelance as a flower stylist.
In addition to arrangement gifts and installations for stores, he regularly holds workshops at cafes and galleries that align with the calendar and seasons.

Vegan Cafe Kurumaya

Kurumaya is an initiative that proposes ways of eating while considering coexistence with living creatures.
We aim to provide enjoyable and delicious vegetarian dining opportunities, primarily by producing sweets that combine plant-based ingredients with spices possessing various beneficial properties, and by selling body-friendly catering and lunch boxes made from vegetables, bean products, and seaweed.
And in 2028, as a new venture, we will launch a vegan cafe at the art center "PAN Okinawa" where you can enjoy Okinawan vegetables.

Currently, on the Kurumaya online shop, we sell "Marui Vegan," baked goods made with Okinawan spices and teas. The packaging for the sweets is an original design by London-based artist Maria Farra.



Venue

The workshop will be held in the gallery space of 7CHOME OTA FINE ARTS.
7CHOME consists of a viewing room and a project room, showcasing a wide range of artworks, from two-dimensional works to site-specific installations.
Workshop participants can also view artworks in the viewing room, which is usually not open to the public.
